Left - right, right - left are not the only options. Some scripts go up and down, some even go boustrophedonically. I knew someone once who was doing a PhD in Japanese aesthetics, his theory being that such things as a preference for the golden rectangle are not human universals. No idea whether he finished it or not, or what became of him. Probably locked in an attic somewhere chewing carpets.
