You are right, I need to lighten it up a bit. Part of the problem was
my inexperience with horse racing in general and steeplechase races in
particular. I was always late to get to where the action was, and
therefore unprepared for the shot and crowded out by other viewers.
Looks to me like you matrix metered and the lighter sky caused the darker
elements to be exposed even darker. Next time I'd suggest you spot meter off
of someting darker or add exposure compensation to get a better exposure of
the darker elements.
