in high school i had a charter subscription to Byte, read a lot of Basic programs, and coded on a TI SR-56 calculator; in college my first computer class was with Alan Perlis who had a fairly radical approach -- he taught newbies APL, then Snobol, then Pascal; next semester i learned Lisp and Prolog in class and taught myself Fortran and DEC-20 Assembler for fun and profit; thus began a long journey
