Wendy..you are So right...extreme sharpness is NOT desirable in a lens
used for portraiture or fall foliage, etc.... lenses have unique
characteristics
which make them excellent for an application and mediocre for others. So many
times I've read here how guys are disappointed with their 70-200mm Zooms
only to find they are spending WAY TOO MUCH TIME AT 200 where that
optic IS sub-standard. Case in point: the Sigma 28-105 f2.8-4 AF Zoom has
taken abuse from several members of this list who apparently are expecting
 razor-sharpness at 105mm and zero-distortion at f2.8....DUH!!!...The lens
has
WONDERFUL softness (portraiture) at 105mm and is very easy to manually
focus in dim light BECAUSE of its large aperture..you'll be disappointed with
results if you actually SHOOT at 2.8 (get it??). I have many fine (and
sharp!)
16x20's using this lens in its sweet range (55-90 @ f5.6-11). I guess the
point
 of my rambling is:
                                KNOW THY EQUIPMENT
                                                    Regards,
                                                            Bob
