In a lot of older British towns you may chance upon a street with a name like Grape Lane. Not funny in itself, but you should know that in days of yore it was almost certainly where the town prozzers plied their carnal trade. Streets tended to be named for the trade that took place there, and in the City of London we still have Ironmongers Row, Poultry, Fish Street, Cowcross Lane (where the cattle going to Smithfield market crossed the river Fleet) and so on. Indeed, as you might expect from the greatest metropolis on earth, we had a whole bunch of Grape Lanes. The name Grape Lane was changed during more prudish times from its Anglo-Saxon original.
