Same here. As someone on the PDML once pointed out, the correct comparison isn't between one lens with a teleconverter and another lens of the resulting focal length; the proper comparison is between a photo using the teleconverter and photo taken with the same lens sans teleconverter, enlarged and cropped to the same field of view. With *good quality* glass (primary lens and TC) you get better end results with the teleconverter.
