Practically and seriously you give sound advise, but I think it applies for general photography. If you have a large portion of the frame of the same tint or color it will influence the AWB of your camera. Then doing the 'gray balance' trick might help. There are other ways, such as using gray cards on the spot or even using back of one's hand for that.
Also it has to be mentioned that AWB of Pentax cameras is improving and even oldish K-7 does a very decent job on the matter. I believe K-5 improved on that even more...
Finally, my K-7 and surely your K-5 too boast ability to fine tune color response of the screen on the back of the camera. I would humbly yet seriously suggest to spend a bit of time and try to bring color temperature of the screen as close as possible to that of our desktop screens many of which are properly profiled with various hardware appliances (Spyder, etc).
