Many phonographs don't produce line level outputs. That's why there used to be a separate, grounded connection for the phonograph on the back of your receiver or amp. Newer receivers often don't have that phonograph connection, and you have to get a separate "phonograph preamp" to convert the output of the phono to line levels.
