You might look into Wein flashmeters for studiouse. They are plentiful and cheap and easy to use. For on the run, you really don't need a flashmeter for a single flash setup. I used to use the venerable Vivitar 283 and 285s. Dial in your ASA/ISO and you have a range of power settings that allow you to shoot anything under a given range at a given aperture. If you are bouncing the light you will need to compensate for the light loss, of course.
