it's largely a matter of taste. When I use the tone curve I keep an eye on the histogram. I try to expose to the right, then in LR pull the shadows back to the left to the point just before clipping, then move the midtones in the appropriate direction to clear any mudiness. Remember, these are tonal values so you're not really do whacky Velvial things with the colour, just changing the contrast and bringing out what was in front of you when you opened your aperture.
