Paul -
My field guide makes me think what you captured is an Eastern Fox Squirrel -
Sciurus niger - similar to an Eastern Grey but larger & with a rusty orange
tail. The Fox Squirrel is listed as 10-15" while the Grey is 9-10".
Eastern Grey squirrels also include black & albino morphs.

Thanks Dan. They were taken here in Bloomfield HIlls, Michigan, at the
Johnson Nature Center. We have red squirrels and black squirrels -- no
grays. When I lived in Jersey and Chicago, we had only grays as well. The
black squirrels were originally found only on the east side of Detroit.
They migrated out here about 25 years ago. They're slightly smaller than
the reds, a bit meaner, and much more skittish. I'll post a pick of one
later.

Two great shots (as usual), Paul!
Where were these images taken? This must be red squirrels; they
certainly are different from the grays we have in our yard.
