Joe, I used a ball head for macro and found I was constantly tweaking it to get the composition I was seeking. A few years ago I picked up a Bogen 410 Compact geared head and believe this is the way to go. Add a macro rail to this and you have precise adjustment in pan, tilt, side to side tilt and distance to subject. (http://www.manfrotto.com/products/index.html?doc_from=home). I also use mine on landscapes and other static subject images.
