One thing that I think we unconsciously take away from these images is something you don't see nearly as much today: the perspective of a waist level camera. Since the SLR, I would wager that the majority of images are taken from standing eye level... probably between 5' & 6' for most people. Waist level would put it mostly between 3' & 4' (and lower) I would guess.
