Text Wrangler is a free download from Bare Bones

May not need it, i forgot i ordered office.mac with the
new computer. I have fired off an email to fetch support
to see what they suggest i do. I like the program for my
site uploads.

i think you'll find TextWrangler much more satisfactory than
MS Word for editing html and other text files; it's worth the
time to download

Absolutely. I can't imagine running a computer without a plain
text editor ... I do most of my first draft writing work in
TextWrangler first, then bring it into Pages for editing,
revision and formatting. (My computer is a Microsoft Free Zone.
;-)
Then you can't write for the NY Times -- or most other publishers.
All of whom want Word docs. Although I suppose there's a way of
faking a word doc with other software. Hardly seems worth the trouble
to me, though. Paul

You don't have to fake it, and it's hardly any trouble at all.

Almost any word processing program has the capability to "save as" a Micro$soft Word document. And you usually have a choice of versions.

Sometimes the program might tell you it thinks you're making a poor choice selecting Word format, but still, it will let you do it.
