Chris,
Galena is part of the 'driftless' area in the NW corner of Illinois.
The Great Lake glaciers never covered a small triangle of Illinois,
Wisconsin, and Iowa.
In the 1820's(??) this part of the Michigan territory was set aside
for mining, no homesteading!
Lead for bullets and paint made the town very wealthy.
The miserable little river in town once hosted paddlewheel steamers.
They connected the town to the nearby Mississippi River, the Ohio, and
New Orleans.
Silt filled in the river and made it impassible, and ended Galena's bright star.
Railroads superceded water transit and left the area a rural backwater.
Only in the last 30 years have developers tried to pedel the area for
resort homes.
Regards, Bob S.
