What do you mean "imported the last saved catalogue from a week ago"?

- If you have the Lightroom catalog folder AND the the original image
files on the same external drive, you just open the .LRCAT file on
that drive with Lightroom and everything should work fine.

- If you have moved the Lightroom catalog folder to the internal hard
drive of the iMac, you right-click on the topmost* folder shown in the
Lightroom Library module, Folders panel and use the "Update Folder
Location..." function to pilot to the topmost folder on the external
drive volume. Then everything should work fine.

* by "topmost" I mean the folder in your image file hierarchy which
contains all the other folders in which your original image files are
stored. You might need to right-click on the folders in the Folders
panel and use the "Add Parent Folder" command iteratively until all
folders are contained under a single topmost folder.

I have an download on http://www.gdgphoto.com/articles which relates
to this ... click on "08 - Lightroom - Moving a large number of files"
as the concepts and operations required are the same.
