Hi All,

Finally, my P 17-70/4 is back from the warranty repair.

According to the work order, they:
replaced SDM;
adjusted focusing ring;
adjusted auto focus operation and verified proper focus with k7 test
body;
cleaned and checked to manufacturer's specifications.

It seems to me that the AF became noisier, but I am somewhat doubting
if it's just my critical perception.

However, what became apparent (as being different from the past),
is the way the focus works:
1. It sounds as if there are more fine adjustments at the end,
and they sound as a staccato of a step motor (te-te-te).

2. When I put my K-7 in the movie mode, the AF behavior is also somewhat
different: It does some long travel or two, and then fires a rapid
succession of 5-7 staccato adjustments:
tuuu, tuuuu, te-te-te-te-te-te-te.
I just checked, and K-7 does the same with the 50-135, but because
that lens is almost silent, you don't hear those staccato sounds.
As far as I remember, 16-50/2.8 is the same way as the 50-135.
So, 17-70 is not as loud as the sounds of the mirror/shutter,
but probably half of that level, while 50-135 is less than 1/10th
(possibly ~1/25th) of the shutter/mirror sound

Hence, the question:
How loud is your 17-70/4?

Igor

PS. As a side note:
The lens came in a 10"x8"x8" box.
It was wrapped just in thin plastic, not in bubble wrap, or anything
protective. The box was full of packing peanuts, but the lens was at the
very bottom, touching the box itself. It is concievable that it rattled
itself to the bottom (I am giving a benefit of a doubt to the packers).
Why wouldn't they use bubble wrap or air-filled bags? Cheapskates?
I believe the industry standard is to have most things double-boxed
or bubble-wrapped instead of the inner box.
