Ann, I cannot stress it enough, but let's say we sat in that cafe, drank our tea and I looked you in the eye seriously and solemnly and said something in lines with: "you oughtta buy a new external HDD and backup that flaky one as soon as possible, whereas meanwhile I would strongly recommend you did not use the current one until you fully backed up its contents".

/glad you did not have to resort to drastic measures this time/
