I will be shooting ~32 shots, each a multisecond exposure, thru each of 4
filters, perhaps up to ~128 in total. Automated computer control is almost
necessary to keep me from going nuts.

Robert, have you considered using the shutter cable release? The remote
shutter cable is just a single 2-wire circuit that you close to actuate.
If you are at all handy with a soldering iron you should be able to
interface a K-7 or K-5 (or K20, etc) to a PC using an external interface
(eg optocoupler and one of those USB prototyping kits).
