The good thing about shooting the full moon is you get to try again
every 28 days.
And in the meantime, you can practice on gibbous moons, quarter moons,
crescent moons, new moons ... go out and shoot the moon whenever you
want to.
Back when I was in High School, it was an almost regular occurrence on
Friday & Saturday nights.
Exposure for the moon is different when it's on the horizon than it is
whenever it's directly overhead. For the full moon on the horizon, I
generally bracket in 1/3 stop increments from -2/3 to +3; overhead +1 to
+3.
It's not always exactly two stops over and I find shooting a range of
exposures usually gives me at least one usable result.
Sometimes you might have to slip the moon from one shot into the frame
with the horizon from another to get the composition you want, but
that's really a whole different discussion.
