Hi all Currently images submitted for inclusion in our Pentax Users Gallery (PUG) are supposed to meet the following criteria:
# Maximum file size is 256kb. # Maximum image dimension is 720 pixels on the longest side. >From time to time there are suggestions that these limits are too restrictive. So, a review is in order. I've discussed this with Igor, and here are some general thoughts to ponder: 1. We have free access to the Komkon server to host the PUG. 2. While space at Komkon is not a big issue, it needs to be remembered that the PUG galleries are hosted permanently so each new monthly gallery adds to the storage requirements. 3. An increase from 720x480 pixels to 800x536 produces about a 15-25% increase in file size while an increase to to 900x600 pixels produces a 45-55% increase in file size (using an 80% compression factor for jpg). 4. Vertical images are a problem because anything over about 600 pixels high requires scrolling on a monitor with 1440 x 900 resolution or less and anything over about 500 pixels high requires scrolling on a monitor with 1024 x 768 resolution or less. This makes it difficult to appreciate vertical images fully. Yes, you can zoom the display easily with Ctrl+ and Ctrl- but most people probably don't do it and, if you need to zoom some images but not others, it reduces the enjoyment of viewing the gallery. The ideal would be to be able to go from one page to another without any scrolling. My preference would be for a max width of 900 pixels and a max height of 600 pixels but even this wont overcome the scrolling problem for people with monitors less than 1440 x 900 (incidentally, 900 x 600 is the max image size used by the Pentax Photo Gallery - although for reasons best known to the designers of the PPG, they actually display the images at about 660 x 440 pixels). As for the byte size of the files, I suggest a max size of 300kb. Anything larger and the delay in displaying images can become undesirably slow. Your thoughts......
