Thanks, David, Richard, Frank, Bob and Jeffery! Waipio Valley is a unique destination. The home of the ancient kings of Hawaii, it lies on the rainy Hamakua Coast of the Big Island, and is one of the last remaining piece of what the Hawaiian coast was like before the Europeans and Americans arrived. Most of the families who live in the Valley are without electricity and other utilities, and live by fishing and growing Taro for poi.
The Valley was home to many sugar plantation workers a 80 years ago, but a tsunami wiped out the village and most of the homes in 1946, returning the valley to it natural state. much of the land is known by the Bishop Estate and the Bishop Museum, charities funded by the last Princess of the Royal Hawaiian line. These charities lease land to native Hawaiians who want to follow the ancient system of taro farming. With its broad black sand beach, it is a favorite of surfers and those who love nature and solitude. It is a place of stunning natural beauty and unequaled peace. We stayed in the Waipio Rim B & B, located on the rim of the valley, on a road that begins with a 25% grade.
