In the Philippines, the operant word is "relationships" -- here
"random acts of kindness to stranger" sometimes does not have the
desired effect and, more often than not, viewed with suspicion ("what
does he want?" "how much will he charge"). We have this cultural
thing called "utang na loob" ("debt of gratitude" ...but something is
lost in translation) which bonds the recipient of a kind deed to the
giver unless he can match the deed. Positively, it bonds friends and
family, negatively it can create a social bondage. So the
suspicion...
