On the *ist D, you turn the camera upside down (lens off) and pull the small tab in the gap between the pieces of foam. That releases the screen and you can lift it up, or turn the camera right side up, and the frame will flip down. You may damage the screen if it scratches on something in the mirror box, so be ginger with it.
I've only ever swapped the *ist D with K100D Super, to see if there was a difference with certain lenses, so I didn't deal with shims at all. The screen has a tab that you can use to hold with tweezers, and the new one goes in the same way that they old one came out.
