Dave Metz of Sigma was interviewed on This Week in Photography (episode 191) and made an interesting statement. He said that all of the lens makers get their glass from Hoya. The difference is in the grinding and coating. (He did say that Canon and Nikon have another source for a small amount of their glass.)
