it sounds like it's storing the message in the Sent folder when it fails; i have a similar intermittent problem in Thunderbird too, and i've researched it without solution; i've written it off to the older IMAP server my ISP uses

as a quick fix, if you're not accessing your account from multiple machines, consider going to the Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors and unchecking "store sent messages on server" (they will henceforth be stored on your computer only)
