I have both the screw asph version and the smc-A non aspherical
version and I wouldn’t describe the performance as abysmal on the istDS.

My SMC-A 3.5/15 mm has sold on ebay.de for a little over 400 euros, a few
years years ago. 

Besides, the optical performance of this lens on a DSLR is abysmal, to put
it mildly.
