Have you ever seen a digital back? They are at least an inch thick. It's certainly possible to do, but I can't imagine any way that it would economical. Would you pay a couple thousand dollars to use an old film camera worth $20 (or even $200)?
What do you do with cameras that don't have removable backs? How to you bypass the camera winder interlock when it is in a different place on different cameras?
