I'm not sure what's causing that problem, because it doesn't happen for me. If I reply to Dan's email in Gmail's web interface, it quotes everything in his message, including the earlier quoted material from me. I couldn't find anything obvious in Gmail's settings that might be causing the problem. Are you using the Gmail web interface, or a mail application? One possibility: The material Dan quoted appears below his signature.
