interesting story! Back at about that same time I went into Central London with a friend. He too had a whole bunch of Nikons and lenses & stuuf, and I too had just an MX and 1 lens and a flash. We were setting up to take some pictures in Parliament Sq and I was putting my MX onto a tripod when I noticed it lurch forward and fall to the pavement. It survived the fall and has retained the ding in the pentaprism cover, but no other ill effects. But that's what taught me always to use a strap.
