Nice set, Larry. I think 5183 has some real potential. The couple's expressions are great. Maybe a bw conversion would work. Cheers, Christine

Subject: High ISO noise on the K-5

There was a live band at the weekly blues dance last night. For various reasons I decided not to shoot with flash, but just go with available light. The musicians would nod their heads fast enough that I kept having to boost the ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed, and ended up shooting at ISO 20,00. The thing that impresses me the most isn't the lack of noise, but the quality of the noise.

With my K20 the noise was mostly blue, which just looked bad. With the K-5 even when the noise is really obvious, it looks almost like one of those paintings that are done with making little dots. Stippling? Impressionistic?

Mind you, for ISO 20,000, the noise is pretty freaking amazing. The thing that I notice more than the noise in some shots is the dynamic range, when there are bright lights in the background, posterization abounds. In some cases I get this weird halo effect around the people, I suspect that it might have something to do with the out of focus blur bringing the bright lights in the background out of clipping and into color.
