To use the AF-540FGZ this way you treat the non-wireless flash, in this case the ring flash, as a "master" and set the 540 in non-wireless Slave mode. It will then fire immediately that it sees another flash go off in its vicinity.

You have to set the Slave Mode to SL2 to make this work. See page 52 in the 540 manual. You have to push and hold the Light button for 2 seconds then press the Select button to set SL2.

Don't forget to change this back to SL1 when done or you'll get really erratic results in normal wireless modes.

The 160FC doesn't do wireless triggers, that's my understanding too.
But I think the 540 has a built in photo cell for triggering in
wireless slave mode. Haven't checked the manuals on this, but I'm
fairly sure that's how it works.

How do you wireless trigger the 540? I have the same set of flashes
and never thought it would be possible to combine them because to my
knowledge the 160FC doesn't do wireless triggers.

I've been playing around with a two-flash setup for macro in the last
couple of days, using an AF540FGZ in addition to the AF160-FC ring
flash. Getting the right balance between the two is an interesting
exercise. When using the 540 to provide background illumination, I
find it most predictable to set it to wireless slave mode, put it on
manual and home in on the right illumination for the particular
background. Pretty sure I haven't actually nailed it with this one,
but even getting to a proof of concept is a small victory for me.

Comments on lighting techniques most appreciated.
