The bio on his web site says he's a doctoral candidate in engineering and the USA is his "second country". He describes himself on the blog linked to his website as a "temporary software enginner".

I wouldn't be surprised if he got a stipend from his "first" country and generous parents to supplement any earnings he makes as a grad student.

I don't think he waited for the 645D to come along before starting his photography "business" either, so there might be some way he's managing to write it off his taxes as a business expense.

A grad student?  When I was  grad student my biggest investment was
groceries.  (Come to think of it, that was still true when I was an
assistant professor.)  The 645D is a lot of scratch on a grad
student's salary.
