I've found this to work effectively for me:

Everything goes into a single gmail inbox. I apply a filter to any
incoming PDML mail which effectively puts it into a folder called,
imaginatively, PDML.

I use K9 mail on the Android phone and only synchronise Inbox so I
only get notifications for stuff I need to see during the day.

If I'm suffering from PDML withdrawal during the day, I fire up the
mobile web browser client for gmail and look at PDML stuff there.

There's another side-effect from not synchronising PDML incoming, and
that's that the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer. I was only
getting 4-6 hours on my Galaxy S, I now generally get a full day or
even more.

I'm sure that there are many variations on the theme...
