I've found this to work effectively for me: Everything goes into a single gmail inbox. I apply a filter to any incoming PDML mail which effectively puts it into a folder called, imaginatively, PDML.
I use K9 mail on the Android phone and only synchronise Inbox so I only get notifications for stuff I need to see during the day. If I'm suffering from PDML withdrawal during the day, I fire up the mobile web browser client for gmail and look at PDML stuff there. There's another side-effect from not synchronising PDML incoming, and that's that the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer. I was only getting 4-6 hours on my Galaxy S, I now generally get a full day or even more. I'm sure that there are many variations on the theme...
