there was an extra public holiday for the wedding, so the whole country had
the day off work, which apparently cost billions in 'lost productivity',
whatever that means. If there hadn't been a public holiday there'd have been
about 3 British people lining the streets and the rest would have been
Americans.

Not that I'm moaning about any of it, least of all the day off. The rest of
London was completely empty - I've never seen so few people about in
daylight before.

The whole business about republican / monarchist is nonsense really. Getting
rid of the monarchy wouldn't save any money since we wouldn't get rid of the
pomp and circumstance that goes with that, and that's what costs. They have
no real power, and we're no more or less democratic than the various
republics such as the US, France and Germany, so although I'm a republican
politically & theoretically, practically it really doesn't make any
difference whether we keep 'em or kill 'em.
