I have to mention this movie: "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" (http://www.metalhistory.com/) made by a nice young Canadian sociology Ph.D. and metal lover. It is a serious discourse on the genre: roots (who was first? Probably Sabbath, but there's room for argument) and subgenres (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres). And in particular there's an extended sequence on Norwegian metal, which is simultaneously horrifying and charming. Serious but doesn't take itself seriously.
