The trick is to light from a low angle, via a reflector. First I tried
back light. No sucsess. Then I placed the flash at about 90 degrees.
Fidled a bit with a reflector on the opposite side, and viola.

To paraphrase the current president of the United States - "no, I cannot". You see, I don't have a flash cord or a flash that can be triggered remotely... I don't have a proper surface to put the clock on, either, although that, I think, can be remedied.
