Peter, I have a number of K series lenses and they seem to be bigger than the M series. I believe the M's are minature to go with the intro of the MX and ME, very minature cameras. All the M's ahve 49mm front filters as a feature, except for the 300 & 400mm. <g> As to the K24/2.8, it seems to be a bit odd. It doesn't carry the 49mm front filter, it's a 52mm... so they can't rightfully call it an M lens. But in most all other respects, it looks very close to the M series.
