You can't do that trip any more as the Southerner was stopped in 2002. I used to take that train to visit my dad in Timaru when I was in my teens. My experience of Dunedin is all from the past 10 years or so. I guess you won't have been to Larnach Castle as that would have been in the early stages of restoration back then. Since you mention the hospital I will add that their medical school has a very good reputation. My sister-in-law is studying nutrition there at the moment.
