Whoa!! Where did this happen? That bridge is going
to need some serious looking-over.

We had a similar, but way bigger incident not long
ago. At about 2 a.m. on the Saturday after Sept. 11
(really odd coincidence) a tugboat pushing several
barges of rolled steel missed the center channel under
the Queen Isabella Causeway by about 100 yards or so.
For some stupid reason, the lights on the bridge were
off that night. The barges hit at only 3 knots, but
it was enough to knock out over 200 feet of the road
on the highest section of the bridge. Nine people
died.

The causeway is the only road to South Padre Island
from the Texas mainland and was closed until December
while Department of Transportation people rebuilt it.
Meanwhile the DOT provided gas money for local charter
boats to run as water taxis. The Island is a big
tourist spot and generally a nice place for locals to
spend a day, so this really hurt their economy.
Still, it could have been far worse.

And here's the pictures, courtesy of one of the local
papers.

Remember, that's a 200+ foot gap in a bridge that's
over 2 miles long.
