There is a government-supplied unemployment benefit. I believe it's means-tested which means they look at your assets etc to determine whether you're eligible. And depending on the circumstances there can be a 6-month stand down period, eg if you resign from your job or get fired with good reason. I doubt I'd even qualify with Janet's income. It's only meant to be there as a safety net and there is a bit of stigma attached to it. You can buy income protection insurance privately but it's so expensive and limited that nobody really bothers. I have learned not to think the shaking is gone anymore... I thought so in February and again in June. We've had a couple of little wobbles in the past few days but they do seem to be smaller and fewer now.
