Zooming for a spot metering is a good idea, but probably wouldn't have
helped much in this case as I was using the A*300mm and AF 1.7x adapter,
(~510mm), and was already as tightly framed as I was going to get. (If
you hover your mouse over the photo, most browsers will give an
information blurb with the equipment used, I'm thoughtful like that,
sometimes).

HI Peter: Sometimes if you zoom in tight with a telephoto lens,
excluding any white backgrounds, you can get a better reading with the
spot meter. Still, that's a tough shot to make. Flash fill can help,
or you have to dial in 2 extra stops of EV. Cheers, Christine

Subject: PESO -- On the lighter side.
Various organizations spend a lot of money to build stands in marsh
environments for Osprey to nest in, this one had other ideas...

Notes: My major peeve about the K20D is it's tendency to seriously
underexpose when photographing almost anything against a bright
background. In this case I dialed in 1 1/3 stops of extra exposure
and I still had to really push to get any detail at all in the bird
it's nest and the field lights.
As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.
