I can't imagine but that doing that type of work leaves emotional as well as physical scars. I read a profile of James Nachtway some time ago, the gist of which is that he's been photographing conflicts for so long that he basically can't function in "normal" society. He'll come back to the US to meet an editor or something, and within two weeks has to get back to a war zone somewhere.
