That's only a problem if you trust the metering.  The short answer is that 
bright lights in the photo will freak out the metering, so you have to go to 
manual (easy to do with K and M lenses), meter on what you care about, then 
take a test shot without the bright area in the frame, chimping the histogram.

I take advantage of digital being so cheap by using my camera as a hand held 
light meter.  I almost always take a quick test, throwaway, shot to check the 
metering, and to look for anything else I forgot.
