I found Lightroom easy to use and able to do pretty much everything I wanted in the way I expected right from the word go. Other people seem to have struggled a bit. Before it appeared on the horizon I had started planning a workflow based on film scanning and digital. I anticipated going out to find several different products to implement it. When LR came along I found that it did things very much as I'd planned - better, in fact - so I didn't bother looking at any other products. The big secret with any off-the-shelf system is not to try and fight it, but to understand the mental model that the designers had, and to match that to your own. The second big secret is don't flog a dead horse - if there's a complete mismatch, get rid of the system.
