I appreciate your comments very much, Jack. Like everyone else, I love to hear praise, but critical comments are more useful. I always find your comments constructive and very much on point.
The "blemished and bedraggled" look of this fungus is what attracted my attention, especially the "notch" or "dent" in one side. The mushrooms we had earlier in the season seemed almost perfect, but this late one looks more like a tough survivor. Yes, you are right in saying that the background is unbalanced. I tried to shoot it from several angles, but there were ugly obstacles in the way that I cropped out of the final version of the image, leaving the unbalanced effect that you noted. I should have plucked it, and photographed it somewhere else, but I was trying to work with what I found. Thanks again for taking the time to look at the image and pass on your thoughtful evaluation.
