I don't know what you mean by a "commercial scanning service" - are
there places that just specialize in scanning?  When I want film
scanned, and if I can't do it myself, I use one of the local,
full-service, professional photo labs in the area.  They'll provide any
kind of scan the customer wants, from a medium-quality scan of around
2,400ppi all the way up to 12,000ppi drum scans. Each negative can get
specific scanning instructions, should that be desired.

Where are you located?  You can try looking in the phone book for a few
quality custom labs, or go on line and find some mail order places.  One
of the places around here is "The Light Room" and they do very good
work.  They have an on-line presence.
