You're the closest... it's the cargo door of a C-17 Globemaster III. I've put some extra photos up on the same page. http://www.multi.net.nz/mystery/ During summer the US Antarctic Program uses one of these planes to ferry people and supplies from their base at Christchurch Airport down to Antarctica. They held an open day on Saturday to let the public have a look at the plane. It was very popular and we had to queue for ages. The line was moving very slowly and we only got halfway through the cargo hold before we had to turn back and leave to make a lunch appointment. They did a low flyover almost right over my house on Friday. It makes quite a noise... I wouldn't mind seeing it take off.
