I ordered myself a new printer last week: the Epson R3000. My Epson 2200, while still functioning, is around 9 years old and the $200.00 rebate Epson was offering until October 1 was the final deciding factor. I ordered the printer from B&H on Tuesday and it arrived the next day(!) Last weekend I printed out targets and, after a 24-hour wait to make sure they were thoroughly dry, made the necessary ICC profiles.
I also purchased Qimage Ultimate recently, to handle automatic image sizing (to the printer's native resolution) and sharpening. I've heard so many good things about this software I thought it was time to give it a go. Cut to the chase: Qimage seems to work as advertised and the Epson R3000 is a real winner: My first few prints have come out looking fantastic and the new printer is faster, quieter and feels much more solid and robust than my old 2200. Qimage really simplifies workflow if you're a print perfectionist. I can't say that the new prints are a *lot* better than what I was getting from the 2200, or if the improvement I see is due to the printer or the Qimage software (and as I make a wider variety of prints I may even increase my estimation of the R3000) but there definitely is an improvement and the speed and quiet of the new setup is pretty impressive, too. Black and white printing is much better than with the 2200: The R3000 does B&W without using color inks, using a special ink set consisting of black, medium gray and light gray. I'm getting stunning results right off the bat.
