First off, I was assuming you were talking about a problem with the
Google search page, but now I wonder if you mean the Search box (that
can be set to different search engines, in the Firefox browser).

Do you have the same problem with another browser (like Opera or Chrome)?
Firefox 3.6.6 is no longer considered current:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-7.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US
Would be curious to know if you have the same problem there.

I mean the search box on the page at http://www.google.com/

I don't use the search box on the toolbar, and I don't use any other browser.

Firefox is supposed to automatically update & *does* frequently prompt me to download & install updates.

I just double checked my preferences and Firefox is set to automatically check for updates, but "When updates are found ... ask me what I want to do". I install the updates when it prompts, but I make it wait until I'm finished with whatever task I'm doing at the time. It usually installs updates the next time I start Firefox.

I don't know why it is down-level.
